Pressure ulcers are an injury that breaks down the skin and underlying tissue. They are caused when an area of skin is placed under pressure. Recommendations for prevention include methods for identification and risk assessment and the preventive measures that should be applied - NICE Guidelines. With increasing law suits involving pressure sores gained in health and social care settings, it is important for staff who are directly involved with care to understand the causes, factors and prevention of pressure sores.
Aim:
To give all participants the knowledge and understanding to maintain healthy skin and prevent breakdown.
The course content:
The course is divided into seven modules and includes an assessment at the end:
• Anatomy and physiology of healthy skin.
• Pressure sites.
• Stages of pressure sores.
• Factors increasing risk of pressure sores.
• Legislation.
• Risk assessment tools.
• Aids and equipment.
Certification:
A certificate of attendance is awarded on completion of the course; this is subject to satisfaction of the instructor and at the end of the course assessments..
